Boney Boned.
"I THINK EUROPE WILL BE SECURE FROM YOUR MACHINATIONS!"
Rare. Not in the British Museum. There are examples at Bodley and at Brown.
Marshall Blücher, the Prussian military leader, examines a tiny Napoleon in a marrow bone as the various allies look on. In May 1814 Napoleon was exiled to the island of Elba after his abdication the previous month.
This print bears a striking resemblance to a satire published over a decade before titled The king’s dwarf plays Gulliver a trick (by Charles Williams for S W Fores, 1803, see BM catalogue) in which a tiny Napoleon is again shown trapped in a marrow bone while Lord Kirkcudbright (who was himself of short stature) towers over him saying, “There you little insignificant Pigmy, I’ve Bone’d you.”
