"THE MONSTER FROM JAFFA"

John Bull treating Buonaparte, on his Arrival in London, to a Jaunt in an Up-and-Down, at Bartholomew Fair.
Rare. OCLC records Havard and Brown only in the USA. There is an example in the British Museum and at Bodley.
A light-hearted response to the perceived threat of Napoleone’s invasion in 1803 which led to an avalanche of printed broadsides warning the English public of the imminent threat. The present example though sees Napoleon chained in a fairground wheel (or “Up-andDown”) while John Bull looks on.
The song beneath is to be sung to the tune of “Hey, My Kitten” and contains the verse:
“Where was his fury and rage
Exerted so much like a monster?
It would blacken history’s page
To name Jaffa, with others among, Sir;
For there he practiced that power
Assign’d him by Pluto, his master,
And hurled to death, in an hour,
His troops, who had met with disaster”
