[NAPOLEON]
Which drowns first, or, Boney’s improved Bucket.
TRADE WARS
There is an example in the British Museum, at Exeter Museum (Heber Mardon collection) and at Harvard and Brown.
A very detailed satire in which the British Secretary to the Treasury George Rose is shown submerging his head in a bucket of water while Napoleon looks on. Behind them Sir Charles Mordaunt threatens an American man, “you shall have neither Mouse Traps nor Razors” and the American man replies “You shall have no grain” while clutching a sheet of paper titled “Resolutions of Congres [sic]”
A comment on the state of trade during the Napoleonic wars with Napoleon’s attempts to stifle the English economy complicated by the influence of America. Bad harvests had lead to high grain prices in England and rioting had taken place which is shown in the background here with Manchester in flames.
